Intimacy - What to Expect in Your Sixties and Seventies

Mature men and women contemplating sexual intimacy as they age
Intimacy - What do you expect as you age?

Embracing sexual intimacy as you age is essential. Although difficult, it’s important to accept that it may not look and feel the same ‘down there’ as it did 20 years ago.

So what can you expect for your sex life as you age?

40% of men and women aged 65-80 are still having sex. Plus, women in their 70's often express more satisfaction with sex than women in their 40’s – it’s not all doom and gloom!

What is your sexual life expectancy?

Sexually Active Life Expectancy (SALE) is a new form of health measurement for men and women. It calculates the average remaining years of sexually active life that a man or woman is likely to have.

For men, this is about ten years lower than total life expectancy.

Women – you thought that was bad? For females, sexually active life expectancy is 20 years lower than total life expectancy!

To put that into perspective, a 30-year-old man can anticipate remaining sexually active for 78% of their remaining lifespan. A 30-year-old woman, on the other hand, can only expect to remain sexually active for only 61% of their remaining years.

But, why do our sex lives become non-existent as we age?

Our regular ageing process can lead to changes in sexual organs. This may mean that you have to redefine sex and intimacy in order to remain fulfilled.

For women, your vagina can shorten and narrow as you age. The vaginal walls become thinner and stiffer, and you will experience less vaginal lubrication (menopause).

For men, impotence (erectile dysfunction) becomes increasingly common.

There are a variety of conditions that can also interfere with sex, including:

  • Arthritis – Sore joints can make certain positions very uncomfortable

  • Cancer – Such as breast and prostate cancer, can reduce sexual interest

  • Heart disease and obesity – Affects older women more

  • Stress incontinence – Increases fear of passing urine during sex

  • Neurological conditions – Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke and Alzheimer’s can affect sex in many ways

  • Medications – Drugs can lead to erectile dysfunction and the inability to have an orgasm

Can you boost your sexual life expectancy?
